The Beginning

Professor Basdeo Bissoondoyal College

The school started in a small building of 2 rooms, both of which were used as classrooms. The adjoining yard served as a playground.

Today from a mere 47 sq.m building it has grown into two three storeyed buildings of 9,290 sq.m which house about 120 rooms. (Classes, Offices, Staff rooms, Specialist rooms).

This college was founded with an aim to open avenues to education for;

  • The less privileged section of the population and
  • Girl students, whose education was largely neglected at that time.

Being a secondary school teacher, he had felt the need to bring secondary education within the reach of the inhabitants of Flacq and its neighbouring regions.

This college was founded in January 1956. It had at the beginning a roll of 68 pupils comprising 7 members of staffs of whom 5 were teaching and 2 were non-teaching. It had two classes comprising Form I to Form V.

In the same year, the school presented 4 students for the S.C. Examination and 2 passed. The following year, the school presented 4 students for the S.C. Examination and 2 passed.

In 1957, upon the firm recommendation of Mrs Collette, an inspector from the Ministry of Education, the college was upgraded to 'B' status, Arts side.

The goal of Mr Ramnath Jeetah, founder and manager of the school was to make secondary education accessible to the poor inhabitants of the village.

The school also offered scholarships to pupils having best results at the end of the year examinations.

Today, following a remarkable improvement in infrastructure, the school offers education to 3,000 students with the help of 180 teaching staff and some 60 non teaching staff.

It also offers a much wider range of subjects, both academic and technical.

A Visual Art studio where boys and girls learn tapestry, embroidery, flower arrangements, printing on paper and fabrics, sculpture of all kinds, pottery and fine arts has been set up.

There are also activities which aim at the cultural emancipation of the students such as drama.

The college ranks among the best of Private Secondary Schools in Mauritius.

Professor Basdeo Bissoondoyal Colleges was awarded the National Education Award - 1993-4 for Best Private Secondary School in the country by the Ministry of Education and Science.
